Ashes At The Coffeeshop Resurrection At The Bus Stop Cycle B
$18.68Lent can be one of the more difficult church seasons to go through, but if God is right there alongside us the whole time, there is nothing to worry about. Mary Austin assures us that God is with us everywhere that we go this Lenten season, and that Jesus is closer to us than ever, even in this time of his fast approaching death and betrayal. However, this does not stop Jesus from being selfless, as he continues to do God’s work and form stronger bonds with his disciples. In the same way that we do not want to be alone during this Lenten season, Austin encourages her audience to also be there for Jesus, letting him know that he is loved: “This week, as we come into Holy Week, let us see Jesus as he is, and keep him company in this journey of suffering. And may he go with us, in every place where we feel abandoned, lost, fearful, doubting…so we know that we are never alone” (“Never Really Alone”).
Austin continues in the idea of emphasizing that nobody is alone during this Lenten season, not even the disciples of Jesus like you and me. Although we may have our doubts, our fears, our lack of faith throughout our lives, Jesus does not turn away from us. “Jesus sees all of this in his friends, as he sees it in us, and what does he do? He comes closer” (“Feet and Hearts”).

Saying Yes To Life
$14.99Saying Yes to Life lifts our focus from every day (and perfectly natural) concerns to issues that are impacting millions of lives around the world. As people made in the image of God, we are entrusted to look after what God has made – to share in the joy and creativity of God in making a difference for good. Ruth Valerio imaginatively draws on the Days of Creation (Genesis 1 – 2.2) in relating themes of light, water, land, the seasons, other creatures, humankind, Sabbath rest and resurrection hope to matters of environmental, ethical and social concern. Foundational to the book are what it means to be human and, in particular, to be a follower of Jesus during Lent. Voices from other continents are heard throughout, and each chapter ends with discussion questions, a prayer, and specially commissioned art to aid action and contemplation.

My Sour Sweet Days
$14.99George Herbert is one of the great 17th century poet-priests. His poems embrace every shade of the spiritual life, from love and closeness, to anger and despair, to reconciliation and hope. And his work is always rich with audacious playfulness: he seems to take God on, knowing God will win, as if he’s having an argument with a faithful friend he knows is not going to leave. In much of theology and spirituality, God is a critical spectator to human lives, but for Herbert, his sense of relationship with God is primarily of a friendship that can never be broken. These are some of the themes Mark Oakley explores in this outstanding book. He offers a poem for every day in Lent, with a two-page commentary on each of the forty included.

Way Of Benedict
$14.99The Rule of St Benedict, written for monks in the sixth century, continues to hold an extraordinary appeal to people in our day. It offers a balanced approach to seeking God and integrating prayer, work and relationships in a way that is more essential than ever in our stress-riven society. For St Benedict, the whole of life has a Lenten character, that is, it should be driven by the power of Easter which permeates every aspect of the day with the transforming power of Christ’s resurrection. The book aims to help readers to engage directly with The Rule of St Benedict. The essential argument is that the Rule offers a way of accessing the transforming power of grace by following the gospel in everyday life, and so is potentially a blessing for every Christian. While the centrality of Easter in the Rule makes the book ideal as a Lent book, it also means that The Way of Benedict can serve as a guide to the wisdom of the Rule throughout the year. While not a commentary on the Rule, the book follows the shape of the Rule in the belief that this is integral to St Benedict’s vision of holistic living.

Things He Did
$13.99One extraordinary week. Jesus rides a colt into Jerusalem. He shows righteous rage in the temple. He eats with the wrong sort of people. He lets a woman anoint him with oil. He washes his disciples’ feet. He breaks bread and shares wine. He prays passionately in the garden. He allows himself to be arrested. Jesus stands in the prophetic tradition of those who embody what they teach. The things he did were carefully planned. And in this riveting book, Stephen Cottrell draws out their political and religious significance as Jesus moves towards his greatest and final act – his death and resurrection.
